Joel Miller
& Sam Wilson
Join Sackville’s own Juno-winning saxophonist Joel Miller and acclaimed Halifax guitarist Sam Wilson for a special jazz matinee at Greenslades.
An award-winning saxophonist and composer based in Fredericton, NB, Miller studied Jazz Performance at McGill University and has performed with artists including Geoffrey Keezer, Brian Blade, and Kurt Rosenwinkel. His career highlights include a JUNO Award for Best Contemporary Jazz Album, multiple ECMA Awards, and international workshops exploring the intersection of jazz and contemporary music. Miller’s latest album What If? is a classical crossover collaboration with pianist Silvio Pupo and the Resonance New Music ensemble. Distributed by Leaf Music, the album features original compositions alongside reimagined works by Debussy, Chopin, Mahler, and Pachelbel, tracing Miller’s personal journey through jazz, Afro-Latin influences, and classical.
Sam Wilson is a guitarist-composer whose practice focuses on creating instrumental music for improvisers. Her current artistic muse is wild spaces and site-specific responses, evident by her latest release Wintertides. Her albums Into a Heart Pt. II and New Doors (Jackson/Wilson Duo) won Music Nova Scotia’s “Jazz Recording of the Year” in 2022 and 2023, respectively. All of her releases have been nominated for the East Coast Music Awards. In 2021 Sam won the Paul Cram Creation award and composed her first piece for orchestra, ‘Recover-we’, which was performed by Symphony Nova Scotia at the 2023 Open Waters Festival.
